How fortunate we are to have so much culinary talent and so many interested participants in our area. We've recorded it all in pictures: Take a look, beginning on page 62.

Imagine meeting globally renowned wildlife professionals where the topic revolves around conservation, genetics, and sex. All the while a white rhino matriarch is nursing her baby with her herd in the pasture just beyond the fence, and giraffes wander in a field around the corner. Arbus July/August 2013 Page14

Art has always been an integral part of the Biscottis equation for a great dining experience. “Ever since Patrick Gabriel slipped an envelope under my door back in 1993 offering to help me develop an art program, we knew we wanted art included in our vision for the business,” says Karin Tucker, who, along with business partner Barbara Bredehoeft, has owned Biscottis in Avondale for two decades now. Arbus July/August 2013 Page22

The nation’s oldest city has always been rumored to have inhabitants from the past, popularizing ghost tours and the like for decades. With centuries-old buildings, the city does indeed carry a deep sense of the past, but it also has a vibrant local community that keeps the city creative, innovative, and energetic. Arbus July/August 2013 Page38

Archstoyanie (Aрхстояние) 2013 is underway! Archstoyanie, a festival held in the small Russian village of Nikola-Lenivets (@nikolalenivets), has become one of the most important gatherings around Russian contemporary art today. As part of the kick-off, Archstoyanie held an InstaMeet led by Russian Instagammers @katia_mi and @russian_moscow.
The village boasts permanent, massive land sculptures that reflect the surrounding environment, and the festival also brings in new installations each year such as 2012’s "Fast Track" trampoline. This year’s festival features 13 projects that synthesize space and sound.

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPbigreveal

weekend hashtag project, whpbigreveal,
Weekend Hashtag Project is a series featuring designated themes & hashtags chosen by Instagram’s Community Team. For a chance to be featured on the Instagram blog, follow @instagram and look for a photo or video announcing the weekend’s project every Friday.
The goal this weekend is to reveal something unexpected through video. This is a common technique in movies, and now with this weekend’s Hashtag Project it’s your turn to try! Some tips to get you started:
  • Pan slowly: To avoid confusing a viewer’s eye (and inducing motion sickness) move your phone at a controlled, sustained rate. Go slower than you think you need to—and then go slower than that.
  • Timing is everything: Have an appropriate build up to your big reveal. Don’t reveal your surprise too early or you’ll lessen its impact.
  • Surprise us: What you reveal can be anything. Have fun with it, and show us something funny, beautiful or unexpected in any way.
PROJECT RULES: Please only add the #WHPbigreveal hashtag to videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own videos to the project. Any image taken then tagged over the weekend is eligible to be featured right here Monday morning!

The Many Faces of @dressupbox

user feature, dressupbox, makeup,
Nearly every day of the past six months, makeup artist Hannah Concannon (@dressupbox) has reinvented herself on Instagram.
"Growing up, between ballet, synchronized swimming and an intense love of Halloween, I had a lot of makeup put on my face by other people," says Hannah. “It wasn’t until college, when I took my first costume design course, that I started to experiment with makeup on my own."
Now, after only six months of makeup study, Hannah has taken up her passion full time. “For the past couple months I’ve been doing makeup professionally for photo shoots, videos and—my favorite—live performance."
What was the inspiration for @dressupbox? “In late 2012 a friend and I embarked upon a 50-day art challenge," Hannah says. “We both wanted to build portfolios for various programs we were applying to and also experiment with different mediums. In 2013 my friend upped the ante and challenged me to create one costume a day, and The Dress Up Box was born."
Coming up with fresh ideas every day is no easy task. “It might sound cheesy, but my inspiration comes from almost anywhere… my buddies’ venus flytrap on their kitchen counter, Hubble telescope images of Betelgeuse, Star Trek, having a particularly terrible cold, RuPaul, Pinterest, the Mantis Shrimp—you name it."
To see what daily experience Hannah channels into costume next, follow her on Instagram: @dressupbox.

Want to see more real-time photos and videos of World Youth Day? Be sure to visit the #jmjrio2013 and #papafrancisco hashtags.
On Monday, Pope Francis arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and kicked off his six-day stay in the country for World Youth Day (#WYD), a major Roman Catholic youth festival. More than 1.5 million pilgrims from around the world are expected to make the trip to Rio for the event and a chance to see the pontiff in person. Despite recent protests and tensions in Brazil, Pope Francis will not use his traditional popemobile (#papamovel). As a sign of eased concern and in attempt to be closer to his constituents, he will instead employ two open jeeps.
World Youth Day will have five main events spread across a few key locations. Be sure to visit the location pages below to follow the festivities in real time on Instagram:

Over four million people will visit Paris Plages’s three main locations over the course of the next 30 days.

The Art of Handwriting with @hansulrichobrist

art, hans ulrich obrist, User Feature,
Love Hans’ Instagram photos? Be sure to check out his @89plus project with fellow curator @simoncastets. The project aims to support emerging artists born in the year 1989 or after with sustained stipends, grants and residencies.
Hans Ulrich Obrist (@hansulrichobrist) of the Serpentine Gallery in London (@serpentineuk) is one of the art world’s leading curators and perhaps its most creative Instagrammer.
In the midst of his daily conversations with creatives—artists, architects, writers and poets like Marina Abramovic (@hudsonmai), Yoko Ono (@yokoonoofficial), Olafur Eliasson (@olafureliasson) and Kanye West—Hans will spontaneously ask them to handwrite a sentence which he then uploads to Instagram. The idea came to Hans a few weeks after starting his account. “I re-read an essay by Umberto Eco, who talks about the disappearance of handwriting, and actually a lot of people nowadays use handwriting less because of the internet. I was thinking it’s interesting because you can obviously lament the disappearance of handwriting, but much more interesting than that would actually be to make handwriting exciting again and celebrate handwriting within this media. So that started me on this project."
For Hans, the series is an extension of the work he does in his gallery. “I see the handwriting project as an Instagram group exhibition which grows organically over time," he says. “It’s fascinating to read the comments. At the beginning, I had mostly art world followers but in the last three weeks many people from other worlds started to follow me which is exciting. I always believed that curating is about building bridges."
